Understanding AREDS Vitamins: Benefits for Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that can affect central vision. There are two types of AMD: wet and dry. Both types can result in significant vision loss, but wet AMD is more severe and causes faster vision loss than dry AMD.
There is no current medical-based treatment for dry macular degeneration in the early stage, however, a supplement blend known as AREDS2 supplements may slow the progression of AMD in some individuals.
The AREDS Studies
The National Eye Institute (NEI) sponsored two studies known as the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS and AREDS2). These studies involved patients with cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Researchers found that taking certain formulations of nutritional supplements, including vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, and beta-carotene, may reduce the risk of AMD progression by 25%.
The second AREDS study found that adding lutein and zeaxanthin to the original formula lowered the risk of progression to advanced stages of AMD and reduced the risk of developing wet AMD. This formula includes:
- Vitamin C (500 mg)
- Vitamin E (400 IU)
- Zinc (80 mg)
- Copper (2 mg)
- Lutein (10 mg)
- Zeaxanthin (2 mg)
AREDS 2 supplements are most beneficial for individuals with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes and late-stage AMD in one eye.
AREDS vs. AREDS2
The original AREDS trial used a slightly different combination of nutrients compared to AREDS2. The main difference is that the AREDS formula contained beta-carotene, which was replaced with lutein and zeaxanthin in AREDS2. Beta-carotene can increase lung cancer risk in former or current smokers, so removing it makes AREDS2 a safe choice for smokers and non-smokers alike.
Where to Get AREDS2 Supplements
AREDS2 supplements are available at drug stores or online without a prescription. Several companies make AREDS supplements, so some may contain additional nutrients or other additives. Before purchasing and taking these supplements, it's important to speak to your retina specialist to ensure the right treatment plan for your specific case.
