Dr. Albert Li’s Life-Saving Care Featured in ASRS Article
A recent article published on the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) website spotlighted the story of how a routine eye exam ended up saving a patient’s life, thanks to the efforts of Vitreoretinal Consultants of NY’s very own Dr. Albert Li.
Like many patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, 93-year-old Maria was unable to schedule her regular annual eye exam for quite some time. When she finally was able to come in, she found that she was unable to read the eye chart and was only able to perceive her eye doctor’s hand motions. She was quickly referred to Dr. Li, who suspected an eye hemorrhage. After consulting with Maria’s doctor, Dr. Li scheduled a same-day cardiologist appointment, who determined that her heart was not maintaining a normal rhythm, requiring emergency surgery to implant a pacemaker.
Upon recovering, Maria is now Dr. Li’s regular patient for retinal care, receiving monthly intravitreal injections to treat macular edema caused by a retinal vein occlusion, which has yielded impressive results. Maria’s story emphasizes not only the importance of regular eye exams but also the need to monitor retinal patients’ blood pressure during diagnosis. You can read the full article here.
